Q & A: A Medium Casting Rod Recommendation
Question:
Looking for a rod recommendation. A medium casting rod (7' ~ 8') to cast paddle tails and 50 - 80g poppers and stick baits.
Answers by #BlackHoleUSA
For casting paddle tails, the Magic Eye 753 has to be my choice. The tip of the magic eye rods is absolutely key to getting action out of baits, and every time I use my magic eye I get more action than out of any other rod I’ve used. If the desire is more towards shore casting and fighting out of the structure, the 804 could be a better choice but may have a more difficult time putting paddle tails out further on casting gear. It certainly will handle the stick baits and poppers brilliantly!

For the medium casting rod, I’d recommend one of the following two
Magic Eye Light popping; 753 or 804 models.

As far as a rod for smaller poppers and stick baits. I really like the Magic Eye 804, I fish conventional so I need it to have good cast ability as well as enough backbone for the fight. The Magic Eye is perfect for both.

As for casting, the Challenger Bank can’t be beat. I think the 731M would be the sweet spot for what you want to do. Many striped bass to 40lbs and bluefish to 15 fell to this exact rod this year on my boat.
Good luck and I promise you’ll be pleased with these choices.

I would recommend the Challenger Bank 731M for casting plastics and poppers. 2 rods are a must in anyone's arsenal.

The Suzuki II UL might be the best bet for tossing the light stuff, 8' is a little long but I think it would work, and it's a spinner. And the 2 pieces make it even easier to keep in the truck to hit the ponds!
